A food processor based in Kansas has recalled hundreds of pounds of fresh cantaloupe from stores as of Friday, due to possible Listeria contamination. The contamination was linked to cantaloupes originally grown in Colorado, and blamed for an outbreak of the illness that has already killed eight people and sickened dozens more.
Carol’s Cuts, the processor of the tainted fruit, was recalling 594 pounds of cantaloupe packaged in 5-pound trays, which was being used as an ingredient in fruit medleys being distributed in Kansas, as well as Missouri and Nebraska. This information was taken from a recall notice posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website.
In addition to the eight deaths due to the illness, a total of 55 people spanning across 14 states have had become ill from Listeria-tainted cantaloupe. The Listeria was traced to melons grown at the Colorado-based Jensen Farms Inc, and was sold under the name Rocky Ford Cantaloupes.
The recall notice said, in part, “Consumers who may have the recalled Carol’s Cuts product in their possession should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or destroy it.”
According to a statement from the FDA last week, the tainted fruit was shipped to 17 states. Not all states that have received the shipments of cantaloupes have reported infections, however. It was also noted in the recall notice that some of the fruit had been sold to institutional customers, including restaurants for use in salad bars or in menus as a dessert item.
The type of strain found in the tainted cantaloupes is called Listeria monocytogenes, and thrives at extremely low temperatures, according to information provided by the CDC. It can be especially dangerous for elderly people, pregnant women or those with a weak immune system.
